I spec-ed this as a layering piece for the 1620 pullover and front zip hoodie. While it can be very much on its own, it is an excellent underneath layering piece. With it you can basically double the weight of said hoodies with one stroke. I am not so much into the side pockets on a crew sweater. However, these pockets are placed and function uniquely very well. So, be open to them.
At a naked 6'2" 170 Ibs 40" circumference chest, I am between the M and L Pullover Hoodie sizes. The size medium hoodie has a below armpit of 20.5 inches chest while this size small crew has a 21" pit to pit and 20" below arm pit. So, said crew is approaching skin tight on me but looks good and is not too tight, while still fitting well under the medium hoodie. At these dimensions, the crew neck is quite snug, but not too tight. Sleeves on the small crew reach my hands at the resting position and as such fit well within medium pullover longer sleeves.
Glad this worked out, as while the small size crew is close to the sizing chart, I still wish everyone published exact garment dimensions per garment. But in any case, the data indicates that if you are looking to inside layer with this, go one size down from your usual pullover if that is your body type. FYI I have the size Medium Zip Hoodie.
I have been looking for a tuff crew sweater that will layer with a variety of graments, especially 1620, and this one fits the bill.
