Running a business is no small feat. For David Gunzburger, owner of Next Day Access Boston, the decision to take on the franchise 11 years ago was rooted in personal values, professional experience, and a desire to make a difference.
The 1620 Workwear team caught up with Gunzburger and his crew on-site in Salem, New Hampshire, to uncover his inspiring journey from nonprofit management to running a thriving accessibility construction company. We also learned why he outfits his team in durable, reliable 1620 Workwear.
David Gunzburger’s path to business ownership is built on a foundation of hands-on experience and a passion for helping others. Growing up, he learned the ropes of family property development, gaining practical skills he still uses today. Coupled with a master’s degree in Human Service Management and years of experience managing nonprofits for individuals with disabilities, Gunzburger's career trajectory aligned perfectly with creating positive change in his community.
The idea of taking on Next Day Access' Boston business, which specializes in installing and maintaining ramps, stairlifts, grab bars, ceiling track systems, and pool lifts for residents and businesses across New England, came from a family member already working in the accessibility industry.
“Once I heard about it, it just made so much sense,” Gunzburger shared. By combining his nonprofit background with hands-on skills, Gunzburger launched a business that helps people regain their independence and live more comfortably at home.
Starting a new business is no easy task, and Gunzburger reflects on the hustle it took to get Next Day Access Boston off the ground in Massachusetts.
“I tell everyone—those early days are a grind,” he said. Much of his initial effort focused on building relationships with physical therapy offices, rehabilitation centers, and councils on aging. These partnerships became key to connecting him with customers in need of accessibility solutions.
Gunzburger recalled the challenges of cold-calling professionals and walking into rehab offices to introduce his services. “It’s about making sure people know who we are, so we can help the people they care about.” Over time, his efforts paid off, transforming initial sales calls into genuine, long-term relationships.
At its core, Next Day Access Boston serves individuals and families during significant life transitions.
“A lot of our customers are experiencing major changes,” Gunzburger explained. “We’re here to make their lives easier and safer.”
From installing ramps and stairlifts to creating custom solutions for mobility challenges, the work spans a wide socioeconomic range. Whether it’s helping a senior stay at home or assisting a family with a child’s accessibility needs, every project is meaningful.
“You see all kinds of stories—some joyful, some heartbreaking. But you’re making a difference, and that’s what matters,” Gunzburger said.
Gunzburger’s team at Next Day Access is small but mighty. He prioritizes trust, camaraderie, and a shared sense of purpose in his hiring process.
“If we don’t like each other, it’s not going to work,” Gunzburger shared. “We spend a lot of time together, so it has to be a good fit.” He hires based on attitude and reliability, and the willingness to learn and fine tune the technical skills needed for the job.
For Gunzburger, motivation stems from personal values and setting an example for his children.
“To me, a hero isn’t a sports star—it’s the person who grinds every day,” he said. “That’s what keeps me going—being the person I want to be for my family and for my team.”
Whether it's hand tools or clothing, Gunzburger is keen on providing his crew with the best gear so they can perform at their best. Currently, his entire team wears 1620 Workwear, known for its durability and reliability on demanding job sites. “When you’re working in accessibility construction, you need clothing that holds up to the job,” he said.
"1620 is making awesome stuff - it just makes total sense," he concluded. "The idea of buying something once and buying it well, is way better than buying something three [different] times, that you're just going to use and throw away. Give me something that I'm going to use for a long time."
Gunzburger’s journey is packed with lessons for anyone considering entrepreneurship.
“You have to figure it out along the way. No one’s going to hand you the answers,” he said. Resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to hard work are key to success.
“Once you make the decision to push all your chips onto the table, failure just isn’t an option.”
After more than 11 years, Gunzburger remains passionate about his work.
“I don’t know what else I’d do if I wasn’t doing this,” he admitted. His dedication to helping others, supporting his team, and delivering top-quality service has propelled Next Day Access Boston to long-term success.
From installing ramps to guiding families through life’s transitions, David Gunzburger and his team continue to create a lasting impact—one project at a time.
