The Frankenpant: We Ran 5 Brutal Work-Pant Durability Tests

The Frankenpant

What is the Frankenpant test?

We "Frankensteined" a pair of our own work pants together with a pair from a well-known competitor, then asked our community to design the most brutal durability tests they could think of. The result — the Frankenpant — is a real, no-favorites torture test of what actually survives a jobsite. Here's what we ran, what held up, and what our lifetime guarantee covers when gear finally gives out.

The 5 durability tests we ran

Every test below was suggested by our community and run on both pants, side by side:

1. The quarter-mile knee crawl

A straight abrasion test — crawling a quarter mile on pavement to see how the knees and fabric hold up under constant grinding contact.

2. Grinder and welding sparks

Direct exposure to grinder sparks and welding slag — the kind of heat and molten metal that shreds synthetic softshell fabrics on a real job.

3. Full-force kicks

Repeated, full-force impact to test seam strength and how the construction handles sudden stress.

4. Spiked 2x4 strikes

Whacks from a nail-spiked 2x4 — a puncture-and-tear test most work pants never see.

5. Explosives and projectiles

The finale: roman candles, birdshot, and tannerite. Overkill on purpose — because the point was to find the failure point, not to be gentle.

What actually held up

Both pants took damage — that's what happens when you point tannerite at denim. But the real difference shows up after the damage. [Optional: add your specific observations here — where 1620's seams, knees, and NYCO fabric outperformed.] Every pair of 1620 gear is backed by a lifetime guarantee and free repairs, so tough gear stays in service instead of in a landfill.

Why 1620 work pants are built to last

Our Stretch NYCO fabric is engineered with CORDURA® fiber technology — up to 10x more durable and abrasion-resistant than cotton — while our Tech Stretch garments use a proprietary four-way stretch fabric originally developed for special forces and professional contact-sports leagues. That's the difference between gear that survives a Frankenpant test and gear that doesn't.

Prefer to read it? In the video we run all five tests on both pants back to back: the knee crawl grinds down the fabric face, the grinder and sparks test burn resistance, the kicks and spiked 2x4 stress the seams and puncture resistance, and the explosives finish the job. Both pants take damage — but only 1620 is backed for life.

What if they do wear out? The lifetime guarantee & 900+ repairs

If your 1620 gear fails in normal use, we repair or replace it — for life. In 2025 alone we repaired more than 900 customer garments rather than replace them, because "buy it for life" only means something if you stand behind it. See our lifetime guarantee, learn about free repairs, or shop the pants that started it all.

Frequently asked questions

Are 1620 work pants really the toughest?

In our Frankenpant test they withstood grinder sparks, spiked 2x4s, and more. Both pants took damage — but only 1620 is backed by a lifetime guarantee and free repairs.

What does the lifetime guarantee cover?

1620 repairs or replaces gear that fails in normal use, for life — more than 900 garments repaired in 2025 alone.

Can you repair work pants instead of replacing them?

Yes. 1620 runs a dedicated repairs program so worn or damaged gear can be fixed and kept in service instead of thrown away.
